Young Mums
Within the My body, My drugs, My world
project, Fiona Martin
is undertaking a study on the experiences of young mothers and pregnant
women as part of her PhD. Through in-depth interviews and group
discussions with young mums and pregnant women, she is looking at
young women's expectations of motherhood, the way they negotiate
their drug use and their role as mothers, the experience of being
a young woman and a mother at the same time, and finally, young
mothers' and pregnant women's needs and attitudes with regards to
service provision.
The aim of the research is to better understand
the often ignored or heavily criticized phenomenon of mothers who
use drugs. It also aims to produce a comprehensive study of this
experience so that service providers, academics, students and policy
makers have access to more information about drug use from the perspective
of the women who engage in it.
